dearKlairs Mid-day Blue Sun Lotion

Sunscreen is a critical step in your skincare routine which is why it’s super important to find the right one. Is dearKlairs Mid-day Blue Sun Lotion for you? I guess we’ll find out.

She’s a little dented. I’ve been trying to finish her for a little bit now.

Claims:

On the dearKlairs website, they claim, “The Mid-day Blue Sun lotion is a refreshing cream filled with hydration, and has a light, weightless finish without the oily feeling. When applied, it has a subtle glow that transforms into a feathery finish you won’t want to miss out on.” Hydration, glowy, feathery finish. This all sounds great but it could be oily, shiny, and unblendable.

Ingredients:

Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Butylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, Glycerin, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Niacinamide, Polysorbate 60, Zinc Oxide, Isoamyl p-Methoxycinnamate, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Chlorphenesin, Xanthan Gum, Arginine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, Betaine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Lactobacillus Ferment, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Fragrance, Adenosine, Disodium EDTA, Guaiazulene, Paeonia Lactiflora Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Lecithin, Acetyl Glutamine, SH-Oligopeptide- 1, SH-Oligopeptide- 2, SH-Polypeptide-1, SH-Polypeptide- 9, SH-Polypeptide- 11, Bacillus/Soybean/Folic Acid Ferment Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol

Welp, the first ingredient is water which is always fun. It’s like opening a bag of chips and finding it full of air. It’s unfortunate but at least it’s not irritating. The next ingredient is Cyclopentasiloxane, a type of silicon. It’s used as a conditioner, lubricant, and solvent. It’s also slightly waterproof and can help plump the skin, filling out wrinkles. However, it does evaporate so the effects are not long-term. It also may be affecting the brain and nervous system with long-term exposure so make SURE to wash off the sunscreen with an oil-based cleanser (even though you should be anyways). There is some controversy over this ingredient as it has quite a few harmful effects on marine life. It has been detected in wastewater streams and they do not degenerate. Overall, this silicone will probably not cause too much trouble but it is a slight concern. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate is the actual sunscreen part that provides the cream its SPF40 PA++, it’s very common for sunscreens to use it. Butylene Glycol is another common ingredient, mostly used for keeping moisture locked into the skin. , Titanium Dioxide is another sunscreen agent, it’s a mostly physical chemical meaning it physically creates a barrier to deflect the sunlight from the skin. Niacinamide is great for again, reducing fine lines and is super helpful for aging skin. Zinc Oxide and Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine are both sunscreen agents as well. Unfortunately, it seems there is less Guaiazulene (the star ingredient) and Centella Asiatica Extract than fragrance.  If you aren’t sensitive to fragrance, this should be fine.

There aren’t any ingredients that stand out to be bad but I wouldn’t say this is a multitasking sunscreen. Its combination of chemical and physical UV blockers make it a proficient sunscreen but the small amount of “skin care ingredients” are simply not enough to be exceptionally beneficial to the skin. It is pretty moisturizing and definitely whitens the complexion with some of the physical chemicals.

The right part of my forearm has the sunscreen on. It’s a little fainter in the sunlight but across more textured skin, the whiteness is more prominent.

The Run-Down:

The price is a little high for what this sunscreen is. The star of the show, Guaiazulene wasn’t as calming as hoped although the blue tinge was very pretty indeed. A big factor of this sunscreen was the tone-up but the blue is definitely not a color corrector. It fades to a normal sunscreen white and leaves a heavy white cast if you wear a lot of sunscreen. The white cast fades s little over time but the obvious color is a bit too much for me. I am a little tan so perhaps this would not be as much of a problem for paler people. If you like to heap on the sunscreen, be warned that this sunscreen may pill. I thought this sunscreen was pretty standard. If you use the perfect amount, I do love the slight tone up and the velvety texture this sunscreen leaves. In order for this sunscreen to look good though, my skin must be pretty good, not too many blemishes, exfoliated, very moisturized. This sunscreen doesn’t dry my skin out and does retain moisture very well. I think with the texture it leaves, it might even be usable as a light primer. Overall, not worth the price but maybe if you are on the paler side, you like a tone up, and this sunscreen is on sale I would say it’s a good buy.

Pros and Cons:

PROS

  • Didn’t break me out
  • A little waterproof (i.e. sweatproof)
  • Slight tone up

CONS

  • White cast if too much is applied
  • A little bit of a weird smell
  • May pill

Who Should Use:

If you have dry skin and you want to use this sunscreen, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!! If you have oily to combination skin I would say get rid of the excess oil if you really don’t like shine but if you want a dewy look, you’re good.

Rating:

Definitely not my favorite sunscreen. I like dearKlairs but this sunscreen was a miss for me.

2.5/5 Punches. I wouldn’t buy it again but it’s not a total regret product.
