Cosrx’s Ultimate Moisturizing Honey Overnight Mask

FullSizeRender-4.jpeg

Ah yes, another Cosrx review. If only this company wasn’t so appealing! Now for this mask… it is considered a holy grail for many, and at the $12 price tag it is most definitely a steal. Yet is it a recommended purchase? Well, that depends. Read on my friends.

Claims: On Cosrx’s website they claim this mask is “Enriched with more than 87% of Propolis Extract and natural beeswax this mask provides intensive hydration with refreshing moisture” As an extra tip this mask can be used as a 3 in 1: An overnight mask (duh), a cream, or a wash off mask.

I like to use this mask as a normal overnight mask because I prefer not to wash off masks not advertised as wash off masks, but I also love using it as a cream. It’s light enough that it works great during the day if you’re feeling like the skin needs a little extra moisture.

Ingredients:

Propolis Extract, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Betaine, 1,2-Hexanediol, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Arginine, Cassia Obtusifolia Seed Extract, Dimethicone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Carbomer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Beeswax, Allantoin, Panthenol, Sodium Polyacrylate, Adenosine

As advertised the main ingredient is Propolis Extract. Propolis Extract is amazing for the skin for a number of reasons. It has anti-bacterial properties and regenerating properties in order to make the skin smoother and supple all while fighting acne. Gorgeous! The next main ingredient is Butylene Glycol, a common thinning/conditioning agent that’s in a lot of products and is safe. Glycerin is another great ingredient, it is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the air into the skin, creating a protective layer to prevent moisture loss. Betaine and 1,2-Hexanediol also are moisture retaining agents. PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil has a weight of 60 so the compound penetrates easily into the skin, but it also allows impurities from the product to penetrate the skin. However, I am sure that Cosrx works to remove impurities. I would still not recommend this to be used on over-damaged or sunburnt skin, Argenine, Cassia Seed Extract, and the rest of the ingredients are all similarly technical, anti-wrinkle, wound healing, or moisturizing. The only mildly concerning ingredient would be Dimethicone. Although there may not be a large amount of it in the product, Dimethicone has a low hazard rating by the CIR with symptoms of mild irritation, drying, and allergic reactions. Dimethicone is popularly used to fill in pores and fine lines, providing a protective layer on the skin locking in the moisture. It is important to note that having this layer will cover your face like a thin sheen of rubber, trapping everything in your pores.

Nice light gel texture with a slightly yellow tinge

The Run-Down:

This product is a decent moisturizer and overnight mask. The ingredient list is short which is always a good thing to see. All of the ingredients are helpful with only Dimethicone being mildly concerning but I’m assuming this is the ingredient that would constitute the mask as an overnight mask. In my opinion, I believe this mask could have done without the Dimethicone as it has all of the other moisture preserving ingredients. I don’t think I would recommend this to anyone with dry skin since it burns when I put it on after a swim in the pool where the chlorine has stripped my skin of all its oil. It works well after several layers of product have been spread over the face, and even still sometimes it will burn. The sensation is mildly painful and turns my skin extremely red although both symptoms fade after a while. If my skin is oily or normal, this product works well. However, I would not say this product is extremely moisturizing as it did not help with dry patches or extreme dryness. The product has a surprisingly light gel texture that feels almost tacky but slowly fades away after a while. As it fades, the skin has the pull of a moisturized face. Although this product is a nice gift and a trusty product to throw in your bag, it is not my top choice. This is probably because if I need an overnight mask that day,  my skin needs serious moisture retention and implementation, otherwise, I would have simply used more moisturizer.
